~Climate change poses serious threats to achieving global targets to reduce poverty. The implications for the poor are of particular concern due to their vulnerability from heightened exposure to increased climate variability and extreme events. Too much or too little water has dramatic and enduring impacts on the poor from immediate and lifecycle impacts of drought or flood to shifts in rainfall patterns. A conceptual framework of the linkages between drivers of environmental change, water ecosystems and poverty is illustrated to assist identification of research gaps and emerging priorities from the recent literature. Seven emerging priority areas are identified and three key messages are outlined.
