Participatory Learning and Action 50: Critical reflections, future directions

This article reflects on two distint but potentially interconnected areas: participation and transformation. How can these processes be brought together to shift the deeply embedded forces of power and exclusion in our societies? What can the language and practices of rights and advocacy contribute to this effort? How can practitioners best engage with rights-based approaches to development? The article explores the ideas of participatory approaches to rights and advocacy, and the challenge of bring these perspectives into participatory work, and looks at the ways in which these elements converge of diverge in practice, sharing lessons from action research.

This special anniversary issue of Participatory Learning and Action contains articles by previous guest-editors and authors from the last 20 years who were invited to revisit their contributions and provide an update on current thinking. The overview reflects on the overlapping themes and parallels in the lessons learnt and suggestions for ways forward.
