The Selati and Sabie catchments were selected for action learning in South Africa; this report is a baseline study on the livelihoods of communities in the Selati catchment.
The main objectives of this study are:
• To define the social, spatial, environmental and economic characteristics of the upper Selati catchment;
• To identify the different livelihood activities of community members and their vulnerability to external influences; and
• To analyse the potential socio-economic effects of payments for environmental services (PES) at the selected site.
A household livelihoods survey was conducted during a follow-up visit to the upper catchment in July 2005. The results from the survey are reflected in this study.
