Wildlife is one of Africa's greatest natural assets, yet local people receive very little of the profit generated by the wildlife-based tourism industry. In fact, many local communities have lost access to land and other natural resources, often without any long-term compensation. Under the Parks beyond Parks Programme, local people have set up tented camps and other activities near parks. This paper presents the development and effects of an eco-tourism initiative in the Selengei region bordering Amboseli National Park in Kenya.
