Most analysis of past experiences and the challenges facing the development of national sustainable development strategies is based on strategies developed in larger countries and the main continental areas. Little attention has been paid to the experience of small island and micro states, yet it is here where many sustainable development issues are most sharply brought into focus. This paper identifies the ecological, economic and social factors which typify small island states, and then considers the opportunities for and the difficulties in developing sustainable development strategies, illustrating with examples of recent strategies.
