Overview of the key issues concerning resource assessment and land use planning for decision makers and planners, and provides lessons from an historical perspective on the evolution of procedures. The main approaches to natural resource survey are critically reviewed, and methods of land evaluation and land use planning are described and assessed. Consideration is given to the opportunities offered by participatory approaches, and examples provided of initiatives which show potential to link bottom up and top down planning. The needs of developing countries for information on natural resources are discussed, along with the problems they face in securing and making use of this, and integrating it into planning and decision making.
