This book was initially prepared as a report to the Department of Environment, as part of the response by the government of the United Kingdom to the Brundtland Report, Our Common Future. The government stated that: '...the UK fully intends to continue building on this approach (environmental improvement) and further to develop policies consistent with the concept of sustainable development.'
