Using volunteers to collect important data for monitoring and evaluation is a growing phenomenon. Technology has made it easier and cheaper than ever before. But it can have drawbacks. How can mistakes and unintended biases be avoided? How can we ensure that the data are both high quality and useful?

Using a case study from Uganda, this guide describes how to ensure data collection by volunteers is done as professionally as possible. It will be particularly useful to organisations that use volunteer or non-professional data collectors but have limited experience in developing or implementing plans for effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
