Building agile institutions and resilient communities
Devolved Climate Finance Alliance
Reflect & Act, 2 pages
This Reflect & Act looks at the action-research programme Devolved Climate Finance, which is piloting an innovative devolved finance and planning mechanism devised to channel global climate funds to vulnerable communities. Pilots are taking place in Kenya, Tanzania, Mali and Senegal through an alliance of NGOs and government institutions. The approach builds financial, planning, and project management capabilities at local government and community level. It establishes inclusive structures within existing governance frameworks to ensure that investments in public goods for climate adaptation are identified and prioritised by local communities, and strengthen their resilience.
County and local governments in the drylands of Kenya, Mali, Senegal and Tanzania have established local-level climate adaptation funds with technical support from IIED and government and non-government organisations. These funds improve their readiness to access and disburse national and global climate finance, supporting community-prioritised investments to build climate resilience.
