Impacts of climate change on fisheries: implications for food security in sub-Saharan Africa

This is a chapter from Global Food Security: Emerging Issues and Economic Implications, available to purchase from Nova Science Publishers. It seeks to examine the contribution of fisheries to poverty reduction and food security, and portray the potential impacts of climate change on the already strained resource in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries.

Fish is a major source of food for the majority of poor and vulnerable communities in SSA. The sector also provides jobs to many people and is one of the most traded food commodities in the region. Fish trade also supports economic growth in many developing countries in general and most SSA countries. However, the benefits gained from the sector are often overlooked in national economic planning. While the importance of fisheries to national economies is often understated, the impacts of climate change on the sector and its implications for the socio-economics of the coastal and riparian communities are difficult to ignore.
