Raita Teerpu - Farmers jury on the democratisation of agricultural research (Video)
History was made in Karnataka on December 5, 2009 when – for the first time in the world – a farmers’jury composed of dalits, indigenous people and very small farmers delivered an iconic verdict called Raitateerpu on Democratisation of Agricultural Research.
The Jury heard and interrogated for four days, a number of agricultural scientists, social science researchers, civil society activists, farmers and farmer leaders, pastoralists and consumer activists on the issue of Agricultural Research. The Jury took place at the Fireflies Ashram on Kanakapura Road, 21 km from Bangalore, capital of the South India state of Karnataka. The Jury strongly felt that there is a need for a fundamental shift in agricultural research keeping in view, the interests of small and marginal farmers, women farmers and farm labour in India. On December 5, 2009 a verdict was placed in front of the government, policy makers, universities, agricultural scientists and all those who are interested and responsible for the future of the farmers of this country.
