Up in Smoke? Threats from, and responses to, the impact of global warming on human development
Written and compiled by Andrew Simms from nef, John Magrath from Oxfam and Hannah Reid from IIED, with contributions from the Working Group on Climate Change and Development. The Report, Up in Smoke, says that global warming threatens to reverse human progress, and make the international targets on halving global poverty by 2015, known as the Millennium Development Goals, unattainable. The Working Group on Climate Change and Development consists of: ActionAid International, Christian Aid, Columban Faith and Justice, IDS (Institute of Development Studies), ITDG (Intermediate Technology Development Group), IIED (International Institute for Environment and Development), Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, nef (new economics foundation), Operation Noah, Oxfam, People & Planet, RSPB, Tearfund, teri Europe, WWF, WaterAid and World Vision.
In recognition of the need to think of climate change as a development issue and not just an environmental one, IIED and the New Economics Foundation established a coalition to bring development organisations into the climate debate.
