This study analyses the changing pattern of land transactions in the west of Burkina Faso, where high levels of in-migration had led to land becoming increasingly scarce. The reportaims to suggest practical ways of ensuring the security of such transactions and the associated transfer of rights. It describes the main features of the various land transactions discovered and how they have been changing in two geographical areas, and provides a detailed analysis and understanding of the problems linked to secure land rights. It concludes with several proposals for ‘regulating’ and supporting current changes with simple procedures to facilitate transactions and give them greater social legitimacy.
