Management of natural resources has gone from the hands of local communities to the state strengthening government development agendas, and instrumentalising local participation for its own purposes. This book considers the evolution of this process in the light of two trends, namely the globalisation of economic interests and the demands for democratisation, decentralisation, and accountability. The authors highlight the strategies various state agencies use to control participation in decision-making processes relating to forest and water resource management in Europe.
