This edition includes general articles and a special theme section which focuses on community management of water systems. ~The general section includes:

A paper on the use of video in community development in villages of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

An article on using PRA to bridge the conflicting interests of conservation and local communities near the Waza National Park, Cameroon.

A report on the use of the 'project benefit-impact matrix' to evaluate the Nhilandhe Integrated Atoll Development (NIAD) Project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives.

A case study of agro-pastoralism in sub-Saharan Africa, exploring recent land use changes by analysing social and environmental processes.

The theme section shares the lessons learned from a participatory action research programme that aimed to improve rural communities' management of their water supply systems.

This programme, known as the PAR-Manage project, ran in six countries: Cameroon, Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya, Nepal and Pakistan. This issue presents the outcome and progress to date of the project, which was undertaken for the International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), based in The Netherlands. The theme section begins with an overview and follows with 13 articles about the project.

There is also a trainers' guide to organising workshops for training, orientation and exposure in participatory approaches.

Tips for trainers looks at the "But why?' exercise, a tool to analyse the causes of problems within groups.
